Benign cystic nodules may have ultrasonographic features mimicking papillary thyroid carcinoma during interval changes.

چکیده
It had been observed that some cystic nodules change morphologically with ultrasonographic (US) features suspicious for malignancy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the US characteristics of benign cystic nodules mimicking papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) during interval changes. Between January 2009 and October 2009, 26 patients with benign cystic nodules showing marked hypoechogenicity in US during the follow-up period were enrolled. During the same period, 38 patients with marked hypoechogenicity in US were enrolled for the PTC group. We evaluated the differences in US characteristics between the 2 groups. Nodule size, margin, echogenic dot and vascularity were not significantly different between the 2 groups. Nodule shape was significantly different between the 2 groups with a lower prevalence of taller than wide in the benign cystic group (11.5% vs. 39.5%, P=0.022). Other coexisting cystic nodules were more frequently observed in benign cystic group (48.3% vs. 5.3%, P=0.001). If echogenic dot was detected in benign cystic nodule, it was more than 1 mm in size without posterior acoustic shadowing unlike echogenic dots in the PTC group. In conclusion, some of the benign cystic nodules may have suspicious malignant features on US during interval changes. A careful assessment of US findings and a previous history may be of value in discriminating them from PTC.

Natural Course of Cytologically Benign Thyroid Nodules: Observation of Ultrasonographic Changes
BACKGROUND The natural course of cytologically benign thyroid nodules remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ultrasonographic (US) changes are associated with changes in nodule volume during follow-up. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed over 4 years of clinical records of patients with benign thyroid nodules as confirmed by fine needle aspiration (FNA). In total, 186 ...
متن کاملPapillary Thyroid Carcinoma Presenting As a Cystic Neck Lesion: Case Series
Introduction: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) constitutes 75–85% of all thyroid cancers. PTC usually presents as a subtle, commonly slow-growing, painless thyroid mass or a solitary nodule in the neck. This presentation of a cystic neck lump, without the presence of a thyroid nodule, may imitate the course of a benign disease, thus delaying diagnosis and proper treatment. Case Report: Thr...
متن کاملThyroid nodules with highly suspicious ultrasonographic features, but with benign cytology on two occasions: is malignancy still possible?
OBJECTIVE There is no information about the frequency of malignancy specifically in the case of thyroid nodules with highly suspicious sonographic features, but with two fine needle aspiration (FNA) showing benign cytology. This was the objective of the study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We report the results of 105 patients with thyroid nodules considered "highly suspicious" according to the ultras...
متن کاملCharacterization of Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinomas Using Sonographic Features in Malignant Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Retrospective Analysis
The diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules is still a clinical challenge. This study aimed to determine the ultrasonographic characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma. The ultrasonographic and pathological data of 2453 thyroid nodules in a cohort of 1895 Chinese patients who underwent thyroidectomy from January 2010 to December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Anteroposterior and transv...
متن کاملUltrasonic features of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma and non-microcarcinoma
The present study analyzed the ultrasonic features of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and papillary thyroid non-microcarcinoma (non-PTMC) with the aim of improving the diagnostic value of ultrasonography. The ultrasonic features of 328 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), as confirmed by pathology, were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were diagnosed with PTMC if the tumor...
